6.5.1 Lubrication

The measuring system is lubricated indirectly through the carriage in the MONORAIL guide rail. For this purpose, the carriage is lubricated according to the specifications in Section 1.12 - Lubrication and Section 4.15 - Lubrication; no additional lubrication is required. Lubrication performs the following tasks for the measuring system:

  • Reducing sliding friction and wear of seals
  • Together with the sealing system, preventing liquid or solid foreign matter from entering the housing (when using grease lubrication)
  • Heat dissipation or flushing of dirt (when using oil lubrication)
  • Corrosion prevention
  • Separating metal and ceramic sliding components by forming a stable lubricating film
  • Minimizing wear of the sensor carriage

When lubricated according to specifications, the sensor function is not affected.

6.5.2 Wear and Service Life

Lubrication of the measuring system counteracts wear of the wipers and sliding components. With adequate lubrication, no significant wear occurs on the sliding components, which means the service life of the guide rail is critical to the service life of the measuring system.

Furthermore, the SCHNEEBERGER AMS system has been developed so that in case of insufficient lubricant supply, mechanical wear on the AMS steel tape cover (guide rail) is negligible compared to the carriage (reading head). Therefore, wear occurs on system components that are easy to replace.
